Located close to the beach and shops of La Jolla Shores, an existing nondescript home gets a 2 story contemporary addition.

The existing garage and front wall remain to provide privacy and separation from the busy street. Beyond that, not much remains of the existing home. An old sunroom addition at the back of the house was removed to increase the private yard space and allow room for a small pool and spa. The West facing doors are oversized but well shaded by a roof over new deck. A roof deck provides Ocean views. The simple stucco volumes were inspired by a Greek hillside home and the wood accents demarcate the interior stairs.

The decision to keep a portion of the existing home rather than scrape it was a desire of the Owners to both stay within their budget and keep existing non-conforming walls. The 2nd floor steps back from the 1st floor walls to provide separation and privacy from the neighbors and public street.
